A guide on doing (almost) Vista looking buttons with gimp.

Notes

User Picture..

CTRL > L = Opens the layers dialog
This is pretty simple with some practice/attention. Post any questions in the comments, because I have specific-ness problems and it's prolly a bad tutorial because I dunno what I need to make clear.
Anyways, have fun.

New image

125px in width, 40px in height. I filled mine with black (000)

Border

Select>>select all.
The add a gradient, any direction you like, I used top to bottom.
Select>>shrink 2px, repeat the gradient but in the opposite direction of last time, in my case bottom to top.

Note

The colors are 000 to 7f7f7f

Text

I'm using sinner, because it's a cool font.
Then add a drop shadow, default settinigs, un-check the "allow resizing" box.

Note

The drop shadow isn't very visible at first, but it starts to stand out once the glow step is completed

Glow

(add a new layer, by the way)
To add a glow, for lack of better word, set the foreground to FFFFFF(white), and select the top half of the image.
Then set the gradient to FG to BG, and add a white gradient to the selection, then set the opacity to around 42%, it's up to you.

once you set the opacity you should have something like this

[fin]

I saved it as .jpeg with the quality set at 100%, because it works well with gradients, IMO.
Just for reference: this is what my layers looked like once I was finished:
