Adding Glitter to Images

Paint Shop Pro Image Tutorials | Submited Nov 16, 2007

Adding glitter to sections of graphics. This tut has been written using PSP Photo X2 - but can be used for most earlier versions of PSP (from version 6 and upwards) and Animation Shop.
1. Open up your image.
User Picture..

2. Holding down the shift key, and using the freehand selection tool, with these settings,
User Picture..
carefully draw around areas of the butterfly you would like the glitter to be added.
User Picture..

3. We now need to duplicate the image by ... Layers > duplicate.
User Picture..

You can also do this on layer tool by right clicking on the background image and choosing duplicate. User Picture..
[If you cannot see your layer section hit F8].
4. Repeat step 3. above.

5. If you look at your layers section you should now have three butterfly images -
one on top of the other.
User Picture..

Now we need to deactivate two of the layers - the middle layer (copy of backround) and the top layer (copy (2) of background).

6. To deactivate left click on the eye icon in the layer section. The eye turns to a red circle with a line through it.
User Picture..

7. Make sure that the bottom layer is activate by clicking on the it. When active it layer section is a lighter colour and looks slightly indented.
User Picture..

Now we are going to add the first glitter.

8. Go ... Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise.
User Picture..

9. A menu will appear (settings explained in earlier "how to make glitter" tutorial). These are the settings I have used.
User Picture..

10a. Deactivate the bottom layer by clicking on the eye icon.
b. Activate the layer above (middle) by clicking on the eye icon (the red circle and line has now gone). Layers now look like this.
User Picture..

11. Go ... Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise.

12. A menu will appear - these are the settings I have used.
User Picture..

13a. Deactivate the middle layer by clicking on the eye icon.
b. Activate the layer above (top) by clicking on the eye icon

14. Go ... Adjust > Add/Remove Noise > Add Noise.

15. A menu will appear - these are the settings I have used.
User Picture..

16. Using keyboard deselect the marquee ... ctrl-d.

17. Now make ALL layers active by clicking on the eye icon so that you can see the eye without any red circle on it.
User Picture..

18. Now you have to save the image. The file extension you use depends on the version of PSP you are using, so ....

for people using PSP8 you must save the file using this extension (I think this extension works for PSP 9 too).
User Picture..

for people using Photo X2 (and I think versions 10 and 11 too) you must save the file using this extension
User Picture..

********

19. Open up Animation Shop and open up the image you have just saved.
User Picture..

20. To view the animation click on the animation icon User Picture.. found at the top of the workspace screen.

21. If you like the animation SAVE. Remembering to save as a .gif file extension, otherwise the animation will not work.

If you do not like the speed and want to change it, using the keyboard Ctrl-A / Alt-Enter - this screen will come up User Picture.. change the display time and click ok. View the animation again and if okay - SAVE.

Here is my very rough finished graphic.

I have only used Animation Shop - so I cannot answer any questions on how to do the animation part of this tutorial using any other animation software. All I can suggest is that you follow the first part of the tutorial, and then when it comes to saving the image you would save using the file extension that works with the animation programme you normally use.

The other way to do it would be to copy/paste each layer of the image into your animation programme as a new frame, and do the animation that way.

Sorry if this is vague, but without using any other animation programme, I am completely in the dark myself.
